The Writer's Voice

Has it been a year already?

Well, I was very lucky to make it into The Writer's Voice blog contest, hosted by Cupid of Cupid’s Literary Connection, Brenda Drake of Brenda Drake Writes, Krista Van Dolzer of Mother. Write. (Repeat.), and Monica B.W. of Love YA. That means all of you get to see my query and first 250 for Bookishly Ever After. (sorry)

To learn more about the contest, go here.

One of my (many) embarassingly overstuffed bookshelves.
It goes well with Bookishly. Really. Kind-of. Uhm..
Okay, I just needed an image for a break.
Edited 2-June-2013: I've updated this post to keep only the most up-to-date info on my blog. If you would like to see my query and first 250, please feel free to contact me (Contact info on my "About me" tab or via twitter)

  1. I love the entire hoagie in his mouth/reality sucks part. Isn't that the truth? ;-) This hooked me right away and I would definitely keep reading! I think all of us bookish types can totally relate to Phoebe.

Good luck with The Writer's Voice, Carli! :-)

    1. Awww, thank you, Jaime! The hoagie part was fun to write--I managed to slip a little bit of Philly flavor right in the first 250! :-)

  4. What a fun premise! I could feel the humor and teenage frustration in your voice. I was lucky enough to win a spot into The Writer's Voice as well. So fun! Good luck!

  5. The first line that made me smile: "The hottest guy in the clarinet section." This sounds like so much fun. Of course, in HS, my clarinet section had exactly one guy in it. (Clarinets and flutes were for girls, don't you know? Not quite sure why.)

    1. Heee, yup, now that I think about it, we had about 2 guys in band. And one of them (the hotter one, OF COURSE) also knew how to play flute. All us girls loved him*. All of the guys wondered why he never lacked for dates. Why they didn't figure that out was beyond me.

*Oh, that moment when he'd borrow your flute just to try some piece of music out and then you'd get it back and it was like you ALMOST KISSED HIM because his bottom lip touched your mouthpiece. *teenage me swoon*

Anywa, thanks so much. Good luck to you, too!

  6. I'm really enjoying your voice here, and you have really interesting contemporary concept.

BTW - I was in orchestra, but wish I was in band lol. Longed to play the drums, but I was stuck with a violin. (although I still play).

    Good luck!

    1. And I wish I had learned violin, as well. In my dream life, I became Lindsey Stirling. In reality... *cue squeaky "Oh My Darling Clementine" rendition on my elementary school loaner violin before I switched to flute*

Peeked and saw that you have a wonderfully nerdy submission, too (*pinky swear that I'm going to hop around this weekend and leave comments*)--good luck!!

  9. Your query really blew me away. I can't feel bad if I lose to you. (I mean, I *can,* and I'm sure I will; but I won't be able to throw a tantrum and whine about how unfair life is. You're really good.)

    1. *blushes* Thanks. *pops over to readheadwriter's blog* Nah, your entry totally great, and I love, love, love your title! Chances are my quiet little contemp won't make it past the first round of all the awesomeness I've seen so far!

      Good luck to you, too.

  10. OMG. It's like you followed me around when I was in high school and now you're writing about it!!! EPIC. LOVE.

Literally, the only thing I can say (besides that I want to read it. ALL of it. NOW.) is that the 'Feebs' name threw me for just a second. I think it's just a personal thing, because I have a good friend named Phoebe, and we call her Phoebs all the time, but just spell it normally with an 's' rather than the 'e'. I'm not sure readers would have any problem with 'Feebs', but I figured I'd throw the feedback out there.

GOOD LUCK!!! *pines to see Bookishly Ever After on shelves*

    1. Aww, thank you, Artemis! Thanks on the feedback about the name. I went with Feebs because (if you'd believe it,) there are people who don't know how to pronounce Phoebe! I figured this spelling would be a good cue for people who might get thrown of by the "Ph" and the "oe"

      Good luck to you, too!

  17. Ahh I love this!! The premise is really fun and fresh, and I get a great sense of who Phoebe is and her problems, just from the query. I am really hoping this gets in. :)

  18. I like the marketing plan you came up with by developing the short stories Feebs reads about in "her" book. I like the premise and the voice! Good Luck.

  21. This, I believe, is a highly commercial concept. I mean, come on! Such an accessible MC for hardcore readers. This is a reader's story, for sure. Outstanding idea. I'd want you on my team! G'luck.

  22. That premise. Oh man, that premise. I'm usually not one for contemporary, but this snagged me. Characters dealing with unrequited love = instant win. Love it! Fingers crossed for you :)
